The New Home Build Process, Step by Step
The stages of a new home build, from first consultation and design through approvals, construction and handover — what happens at each step and what to expect.
A new home build runs through a clear sequence of stages, and knowing what happens at each one makes the whole project less daunting. This guide outlines the path from first conversation to handover, so you know what to expect and when.
Every build is different, but the shape of the journey is consistent. Here is how a Riversedge project typically unfolds.
From enquiry to contract
It starts with a conversation about your site, your brief and your budget. From there we move into design and a detailed, itemised quote, confirm the approval pathway your block needs, and resolve the specification — the finishes, fixtures and inclusions — before anything is signed. Getting the design and specification settled at this stage is what makes a fixed-price contract reliable and keeps surprises to a minimum once we are on site.
From site start to handover
Once approvals are in place and the contract is signed, construction follows the usual sequence — site preparation and footings, frame, lock-up, fit-out and finishes — with progress payments tied to completed stages. You stay informed throughout, with the same builder running the job from start to finish. At handover we walk through the finished home together, and statutory home-warranty cover applies to residential work over the regulated threshold.
Questions
- How long does a new home build take?
- It varies with the size and complexity of the home, the site, approvals and weather, so a realistic programme is set once the design is resolved. We give you an honest timeline for your specific project rather than a generic figure, and keep you updated as the build progresses.
- Who is my point of contact during the build?
- The same builder who quotes your job runs it. You are not handed between a sales team and a site team — you deal with the person responsible for the build, which keeps communication clear and decisions quick.
